AV, security and networking in Port Jefferson
A good part of the village is genuinely old, and the commercial buildings have been fitted out and refitted more times than anyone has a record of. Every one of those left something behind a wall.
The building is older than the system going into it
Work in stock like this starts by finding out what is already there, not by picking equipment. What comes out of a wall is rarely a pleasant surprise, and it is always cheaper to meet it before a price is agreed than afterwards.
That is the whole difference in approach here. The equipment is the same equipment; the survey in front of it is longer, and the quote is written knowing what the survey found.
There is nothing to reuse
A modern building hands you a path and something to pull through. These do not. Behind the plaster there is lath, some of the walls are solid masonry that will not take a fish tape, and joists have an unhelpful habit of running across the direction you need.
Masonry is the one that catches people out. A pull that would be twenty minutes in a stud partition becomes most of an afternoon, or becomes a surface route that the owner needs to see and agree to before it exists.
The route decides the layout
So the order of decisions inverts. Where a screen or a speaker ends up is settled by what can physically be got to it, and that gets worked out before anybody is told where things will go.
Sometimes the answer is to move the device. Sometimes it is to accept a trunking run and make it deliberate and neat instead of pretending it will not be visible. What it should never be is a drawing agreed in an office that becomes an argument on site.

Common questions
Can an older building be wired without tearing it apart?
Usually, but the honest answer depends on the wall. Some routes are straightforward once found, some need a surface run, and some need the device to move. That gets established at survey rather than discovered halfway through.
Why does a job here take longer than the same job elsewhere?
Almost always the cable, not the equipment. Solid walls, no existing conduit and awkward joist runs turn a short pull into a long one, and that is the part of the estimate that moves.
Do you do residential work in the village too?
Yes. The older-building problem is the same in a house as in a restaurant, and often more so, because there is less appetite for a visible cable route at home.
