Q-SYS & Control Systems

A room with good equipment and bad control is a room nobody uses correctly. We design and program Q-SYS systems that handle the audio processing, the routing, and the control layer together, then build the interface around how the space is actually operated — a bartender changing what is on a TV, a manager setting zone volumes, a presenter walking in and pressing one button. Q-SYS programming is core work for us, not something we subcontract — we develop custom Q-SYS plugins in house, several of which are publicly available.

Q-SYS as the Platform, Not Just the DSP

Q-SYS is frequently sold as an audio processor and then used as one, with a separate control system bolted alongside it. That is where cost and fragility come from. The platform handles audio processing, network audio transport, control logic and the user interface in one design file, which means fewer boxes, one place to look when something misbehaves, and no translation layer between the control system and the audio it is supposed to be controlling.

Design starts with signal flow and room behavior, not a parts list. What sources exist, where audio needs to go, which zones are independent, what happens when a page fires, what a room does when it is combined with the one next door. Once that is settled, the Core, peripherals and endpoints get specified to fit — with I/O headroom for the change that always comes a year later.

Because control lives in the same file as the audio, a change is one change. Adding a zone, retiring a source or reworking a page group does not mean reprogramming two systems and hoping they agree.

Interfaces Built Around How the Room Is Used

The person using the system is rarely the person who commissioned it. A bartender needs to change a TV feed in four seconds without thinking. A front desk manager needs zone volume and a music source, and nothing else. An AV-comfortable operator may need routing, mic gain and camera presets. Those are three different interfaces on the same system, and building one screen that tries to serve all of them serves none of them.

We build layered interfaces: a simple screen for daily use, and access-controlled pages for the settings that should not change casually. Touch panels go where operation is constant. Wall panels handle rooms that need volume, source and little else. Tablets and phones cover managers who move around the building — the same interface, reachable from wherever they are standing.

Presets carry a lot of weight. Open, close, game day, service, presentation, all-call: each recalls levels, routing, display states and lighting in one action so the room is set correctly by someone who has never seen the rack.

Custom Plugins and Third-Party Devices

Real installations contain devices that do not offer clean control out of the box. Satellite receivers, older projectors, matrix switchers, lighting processors and legacy gear all need to be driven, and the gap between technically controllable and controllable from a touch panel a manager can use is where most integrations fall apart.

We close that gap by writing Q-SYS plugins in house, tailored to the device and the job. Several of them are publicly available. They exist because we needed them on real installations, and building them properly was better than working around the limitation.

That capability changes what is possible on a project. When a device has no usable native integration, the answer is not a separate remote taped to the wall or a second control system — it is control logic written to that device's actual protocol, presented on the same interface as everything else. IP where the device supports it, serial where it does not, IR through a gateway where that is all there is.

The Audio Engineering Underneath

Control gets the attention; DSP determines whether the room sounds right. Gain structure is set through the whole chain so the system runs with headroom instead of clipping at the input and being pulled down later. Zones are equalized to the space. Dynamics are applied deliberately, not as a blanket limiter hiding a level problem.

In conference and meeting spaces, acoustic echo cancellation is the difference between a call that works and one where the far end hears themselves. AEC needs a correct reference signal, sensible mic gain and processing ordered properly. It is not a checkbox, and when it is treated like one the complaints show up on the first call of the week.

Paging and priority get designed too. Announcements duck or override music at defined levels, reach the zones they should reach, and follow a priority order so an emergency page is never sitting behind a lunch announcement.

Commissioning, Documentation and Ongoing Support

Systems are commissioned on site, not just powered up — inputs, zones, sources and presets checked against how the room will actually run. Then we walk the staff through the interface they will use, focused on daily operation rather than a tour of the rack.

Design files and notes on the control logic are part of what can be turned over, scoped with you at the outset. If your organization has internal AV staff, they get access. If not, we hold the file and it is available to you.

Q-SYS supports remote access, which means most adjustments — a level change, a new preset, a relabeled source, a fix after a device swap — happen without a truck roll. For venues across Long Island where a scheduled visit means working around events and service hours, that matters more than it sounds.

What makes Q-SYS different from a standard DSP with a separate control system?

Q-SYS combines audio processing, network audio transport, control logic and the user interface in one platform and one design file. That removes an entire integration layer between the control system and the audio, cuts down on hardware, and means troubleshooting happens in one place instead of two systems pointing at each other.

What is a Q-SYS plugin, and why would we need a custom one?

A plugin is a control module inside a Q-SYS design that speaks a specific device's protocol and exposes its functions to the rest of the system. You need a custom one when a device has no usable native integration — common with satellite receivers, older projectors and niche hardware. We write them in house rather than working around the limitation, and several of ours are publicly available.

Can we control the system from a phone or tablet?

Yes. The same interface can run on a wall-mounted touch panel, a tablet behind the bar and a manager's phone, with different permission levels for each. It is common to give staff a simple screen and reserve routing, gain and system settings for a protected page.

Can lighting, cameras and climate really run through the same interface as audio and video?

If the device can be controlled over IP, serial or IR, it can generally be brought into the design. Lighting scenes, shade positions, camera presets and thermostat setpoints become part of the same presets as audio and display control, so one button sets the whole room. Which devices integrate cleanly depends on the specific models, and we confirm that before committing to it.

We already have a Q-SYS system that was never finished properly. Can you take it over?

Yes, and it is a common request. We review the existing design file, document what is actually there, and identify what is misconfigured versus what is a hardware limitation. In most cases the platform is capable and the design was left incomplete, so reworking it costs far less than replacing it.

How much of the system can be changed without someone coming to the site?

Most of it. With remote access in place, level adjustments, new presets, relabeling, logic changes and reprogramming after a device swap can all be done remotely. Physical work — a failed amplifier, a new speaker zone, a panel relocation — obviously still requires a visit.
