Access Control & Intercom Systems

Access control is where electronics meet mechanical hardware, building code, and human habit. Getting it right means understanding all four. We design and install credentialed entry for commercial, industrial, and multi-tenant buildings across Long Island, from a single controlled door at a shop entrance to a full property with schedules, tenant partitions, and audit reporting.

Credentials People Will Actually Use

Credential choice sets the tone for the entire system. Low-frequency proximity fobs are cheap and familiar, but the common 125 kHz formats have been trivially clonable for years with hardware anyone can buy. Encrypted smart cards close that gap. Mobile credentials eliminate the front desk drawer of unreturned fobs and let an owner revoke somebody at nine at night from a parking lot.

Touchless readers matter where hands are full or dirty, such as kitchens, labs, and dock doors. Face-based and NFC readers both perform well when mounted at the right height with controlled lighting, and both perform badly when bolted to a west-facing glass vestibule at four in the afternoon. Placement is not an afterthought.

Most real buildings end up mixed. Employees on phones, contractors on cards, a cleaning crew on a scheduled code. That is fine, as long as every credential traces back to a specific person and can be shut off in seconds.

Readers, Controllers, and the Wiring Behind Them

We wire readers on OSDP where the hardware supports it. Wiegand still exists in the field and still works, but it is unencrypted and sends credential data down a cable anyone can tap at the reader. OSDP gives you encryption and supervision on the same shielded composite run, and tells the controller when a reader stops answering.

Controllers and power supplies live in a secured room or locked enclosure, never above a ceiling tile in a public corridor. Power supplies get battery backup sized to hold the doors in their intended state through an outage, and fire alarm release relays get landed and tested rather than left as a wire nut and a promise.

Cloud-managed platforms are convenient and we install plenty of them. What matters is that the controller keeps making decisions locally when the internet drops. A door that stops reading credentials because a modem rebooted is not an access control system, it is a liability.

Door Hardware Is Half the Job

The electronics are usually the easy part. The hard part is a twenty-year-old aluminum storefront door with a sagging closer and a strike plate that no longer aligns. Electric strikes need a frame that can accept them. Magnetic locks need a solid mounting surface and a plan for egress. Electrified panic hardware needs a power transfer hinge and a door prepped to receive it.

Code drives a lot of these decisions. Free egress is not negotiable, fire-rated openings have specific requirements, and release on fire alarm activation has to be wired and verified, not assumed. Requirements vary between jurisdictions across Suffolk and Nassau, so we coordinate with the locksmith, the general contractor, and the authority having jurisdiction rather than guessing.

A door that does not latch consistently will generate forced-door and held-open alarms until people stop believing the system. We fix the mechanical problem first, because software cannot compensate for a door that never fully closes.

Intercom and Entry

Not everyone who arrives at your building carries a credential. Deliveries, visitors, contractors, and prospective tenants all need a way in that does not involve somebody walking down three flights. Video intercom handles that, whether it rings a desk station, a set of phones, or a tenant directory in a lobby.

Multi-tenant properties bring their own requirements: a searchable directory, per-unit call routing, postal access, and a door release that logs who granted it. Industrial sites usually need something different, such as a weather-rated station at a gate two hundred feet up a driveway, wired properly rather than run on a cellular device that fails silently.

We match the intercom to how the building actually greets people. A single tenant with a receptionist has different needs than a twelve-unit building where every resident answers their own door from a phone.

Schedules, Audit Trails, and Who Runs It

Once doors are controlled, the useful work happens in the rules. Schedules unlock the lobby at business hours and lock it at close. First-person-in logic prevents the front door from unlocking on a snow day when nobody made it in. Holiday calendars stop the building from opening itself on a day you are closed.

Audit logs answer questions that used to be unanswerable. Who opened the stockroom at 5:40 in the morning. Whether the alarm was disarmed before or after the side door opened. Which credential was used at a door forty minutes before inventory came up short.

We set up the administrator accounts, document the procedure for adding and removing people, and train whoever owns that task day to day. Offboarding is the part most buildings get wrong, so we make sure the person responsible knows exactly where to click when somebody leaves.

Access Control & Intercom: what clients ask before they book

Can we use phones instead of cards?

Yes. Mobile credentials work over Bluetooth or NFC and are issued and revoked from the management platform, so nobody has to chase down a fob after a termination. Most sites run mobile for regular staff and keep a small pool of physical cards for visitors, contractors, and anyone who does not want an app on a personal phone.

Is face recognition reliable, and what about privacy?

Modern face readers are fast and accurate when mounted at the right height and shielded from direct sun or backlight. On the privacy side, most systems store a mathematical template rather than a usable photograph, and enrollment is opt-in per person. We recommend keeping an alternate credential available so nobody is forced to enroll.

What happens to the doors during a fire or a power outage?

That depends on whether each opening is fail-safe or fail-secure, and that choice is driven by code and by the door's role in egress. Magnetic locks release on fire alarm activation. Battery backup keeps the system operating through short outages. Free egress from the inside is maintained regardless of what the electronics are doing.

Can I keep my existing doors and hardware?

Frequently, yes. Many doors just need a strike, a power transfer, and a properly adjusted closer. Some need frame work or a hardware swap before anything electronic makes sense. We survey each opening and tell you which ones are ready and which ones need attention, so there are no surprises after the walls are open.

Does access control work if the internet goes down?

It should, and we design for it. Controllers cache credentials and permissions locally, so cards, fobs, and codes keep working during an outage. What pauses is remote administration and live event reporting, which catch up automatically once connectivity returns.

Can access control tie into cameras and the alarm system?

Yes, and it is one of the most valuable things you can do. Door events can be linked to video so a badge swipe pulls up the clip of that moment, and a forced-door event can trigger both a recording bookmark and an alarm notification. The level of integration depends on the platforms involved, and we scope that before purchase.
