Acoustic Treatment and Room Tuning

Some rooms cannot be fixed with equipment. Hard surfaces send every sound to every listener several times over, so speech stops being intelligible and music becomes tiring long before it becomes loud. That is an acoustics problem, and adding amplification makes it worse. We measure what a room is doing and treat it.

When the Room Is the Problem, Not the System

A hard room defeats a good sound system. Parallel walls, glass, tile and a flat ceiling give sound nowhere to go, so it arrives at each listener directly and then again off every surface, a few milliseconds later each time. Your ear cannot separate those arrivals from the original, so what you hear is smeared rather than echoed — which is why people describe the room as loud rather than as reverberant.

Turning it up makes it worse, because every reflection comes up with the source. More speakers at lower output genuinely helps, and it is the first thing we design around, because covering a room evenly means no single speaker has to be driven hard enough to excite it. But past a point the room itself has to be dealt with.

This is the one page on this site that argues against buying equipment. If a room is ringing, a bigger system is money spent making the problem louder, and you will end up paying for the treatment afterwards anyway.

Measure First

Rooms do not misbehave evenly across the spectrum, and that is the part guesswork gets wrong. A space can be perfectly controlled at speech frequencies and completely untreated below them, or the reverse — and the two need entirely different material in entirely different places.

So the room gets measured before anything is specified: how long sound takes to decay, at which frequencies, and where the early reflections are arriving from. That produces a plan you can argue with, rather than a quantity of panels.

It also settles a question worth settling early. If the measurements say the decay is fine and the problem is that half the room is out of coverage, that is a layout problem and treatment is the wrong purchase. Knowing which of the two you have is the whole reason to measure.

Absorption, Diffusion, and Why Foam Disappoints

Thin foam is the standard disappointment. It absorbs the top end hard and does almost nothing lower down, so a room treated with it loses its brightness without losing its volume — quieter-sounding in a way that is actually just duller, with all the fatiguing energy still present.

Absorption works by thickness and by distance from the wall. Lower frequencies need more of both, which is why an inch of something on a flat wall cannot touch the range where a bar is loudest, and why corners matter more than the middle of a wall.

Diffusion is the other half. Treat every surface and a room goes dead — voices sound close and flat, music loses its sense of space, and people find it as unpleasant as the ringing did. Diffusion scatters energy instead of removing it, which keeps the room alive while stopping the reflections from stacking up.

Placement matters more than quantity. The same panel count put where the early reflections actually land will beat twice as much spread evenly around the walls, and it costs less.

Treatment That Suits the Room It Is In

A restaurant cannot look like a recording studio. Most of the rooms we treat have finishes, sightlines and a design somebody paid for, and treatment that ignores those does not get installed — or gets removed within a year.

So it gets planned around what the room has to keep. Ceiling treatment where the walls are spoken for, absorption behind existing surfaces, panels in the finish and colour the room already uses, placement worked out so the visible count is as low as it can be and still do the job.

For studios and home theaters, where appearance is more forgiving, the same principle runs the other way: the budget goes into thickness and placement rather than into making a modest amount of material look considered.

Acoustic Treatment: what clients ask before they book

Is acoustic treatment just foam on the walls?

No, and foam alone is usually the wrong answer. It absorbs high frequencies hard and leaves the low-mid range untouched, which makes a room duller without making it quieter. Treatment means measuring the room first, then placing absorption and diffusion where they do real work. Placement matters more than quantity.

How do we know whether we need treatment or a better system?

We measure. If the room is ringing, more equipment makes it louder rather than clearer and you would be paying twice. If the decay is fine and half the room is simply out of coverage, that is a layout problem and treatment is the wrong purchase. Knowing which one you have is the reason to have someone look before anything is ordered.

Will it make our restaurant look like a studio?

It should not. Most rooms we treat have finishes and sightlines somebody paid for, and treatment that ignores them gets removed within a year. Can you treat a room that is already open and trading?

Usually. Most treatment goes onto surfaces rather than into them, so it does not need the room stripped. The scheduling is the real constraint, not the work, and that gets planned around your trading hours.

Do you do this alongside a sound system, or on its own?

Either. Where we are designing the system too, the speaker layout and the treatment get solved together, which usually means less of both. Where a system already exists and is not the problem, treatment on its own is often the entire answer.
